Study Group
30 January - 3 February 2012
|
The scientific proceedings of SWI 2012 are available in pdf format. For paper copies, please contact Patty Koorn
One week (Monday to Friday) a group of 50 to 80 mathematicians, working in academia or industry, from anywhere in the Netherlands and from abroad come together to tackle industrial problems. Companies present their problems on Monday. The group of mathematicians then devote the entire week aiming for solutions of the problems. Friday the groups present their solution.
This is the 84th European Study Group
Mathematics with Industry, following many earlier successful events.
Check
Problems for examples of proceedings and read more about SWI at the
International
Study Group Website.
SWI 2011 was held from
January 24 to 28, at the
Department of Mathematics of the
Vrije Universiteit
in Amsterdam.

the meeting, and the reimbursement will take place afterwards.
Background information
The Study Group is an industrial/academic week where mathematics is used to tackle industrial problems. The formula of setting aside a week for intensive study of a few real world problems originates in Oxford in 1968 and has since spread around the world. See the links to other Study Groups. The success of a study group can be attributed to a number of reasons, for example:
The participants are free to join any of the problem sessions or serve more projects with their expertise.
