History of SemStat

The SemStat were initiated by Ole E. Barndorff-Nielsen, Wilfried Kendall and Gerard Létac in 1989, as a meeting at which high-level expository talks would be presented on new developments in statistics, with the objective of promoting a “European School of Statistics”. They wanted to emulate for statistical science the success of the Strasbourg Probability Seminar and the Saint-Flour Summer school (which both have had a big and continuing impact on probability from the 60's till today). As a result of each SemStat there is a conference volume of expository articles based on the main talks. Since August 1996 SemStat takes place under the auspices of the European Regional Committee of the Bernoulli Society for Mathematical Statistics and probability. Since 2016 the Lecture Notes of the SemStat meetings are published in an innovative Elements publishing scheme prior to the meeting by Cambridge University Press.

Aim of Short Course

A major challenge in many modern economic, epidemiological, ecological and biological questions is to understand the randomness in the network structure of the entities they study: for example, the SARS epidemic showed how preventing epidemics relies on a keen understanding of random interactions in social networks, the financial crises in 2008 arose from structural changes in the financial lending network induced by the subprime mortgage collapse, whereas progress in curing complex diseases is aided by a robust data-driven network approach to biology.

The aim of this short course is to introduce particularly early career researchers to the field of STATISTICAL NETWORK SCIENCE.
Two lecturers will each from their unique perspective introduce various aspects of network modelling and inference.
- Eric Kolaczyk's (Boston University) research interests revolve mainly around the statistical analysis of network-indexed data, with particular focus on both foundational issues and applied network problems.
- Alberto Roverato (University of Bologna) is interested in processes that occur on networks or, more specifically, graphs. He has made fundamental contributions to the field of graphical models and used them in reverse engineering of molecular regulatory networks.

Specifically for this course, the two lecturers have written two books, to be published by Cambridge University Press in February 2017.


 

COST “European Cooperation on Statistics for Network Data Science”

COST is the longest-running European framework supporting trans-national cooperation among researchers, engineers and scholars across Europe. It is a unique means for them to jointly develop their own ideas and new initiatives across all fields in science and technology. In May 2016 a COST Action on Statistical Network Science (CA15109) has started to bring together statisticians, probabilists, computer scientists and applied scientists to collaborate on innovative approaches to statistical network modelling, inference and analysis. The Action involves researchers from 28 countries and is chaired by Prof. Ernst Wit (Groningen).

Managing your research career

It is broadly acknowledged world-wide that young researchers currently experience a lot of pressure in building their career and securing an academic job. `Early-career researchers need fewer burdens and more support’ says the editorial of a recent issue of Nature (27 October 2016).
One of the goals of the COSTNET action is to actively involve young researchers and help them in their careers. In this session, we will address two topics that both PhD students and senior researchers recognize as extremely important in building your career in science.
1. How to pitch your research to experts or general audience. We will discuss three very helpful modern forms of pitches and try out how to use them in practice.
2. How to be proactive. Although this might not be obvious from the first sight, being proactive is the key to achieving your career goals, improving visibility and even securing the necessary help from your advisor. We will discuss what it means to be proactive, and what simple specific actions you can take to become proactive in managing your career.

Eurandom is located on the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology, in the Metaforum building (4th floor) (about the building). The university is located at 10 minutes walking distance from Eindhoven main railway station (take the exit north side and walk towards the tall building on the right with the sign TU/e).

●      Travel

For those arriving by plane, there is a convenient direct train connection between Amsterdam Schiphol airport and Eindhoven. This trip will take about one and a half hour. For more detailed information, please consult the NS travel information pages.

Many low cost carriers also fly to Eindhoven Airport. There is a bus connection to the Eindhoven central railway station from the airport. (Bus route number 401) For details on departure times consult http://www.9292ov.nl

The University  can be reached easily by car from the highways leading to Eindhoven (for details, see our route descriptions or consult our map with highway connections.

The meeting-room is equipped with a data projector, an overhead projector, a projection screen and a blackboard. Please note that speakers and participants making an oral presentation are kindly requested to bring their own laptop or their presentation on a memory stick.

Upon arrival, participants should register with the workshop officer, and collect their name badges. The workshop officer will be present for the duration of the conference, taking care of the administrative aspects and the day-to-day running of the conference: registration, issuing certificates and receipts, etc.
