YEQT-III
(Young European Queueing Theorists)
"Scheduling and Resource Sharing in Queueing
Networks" Summary The Internet and wireless technologies have become the fundamental components of the worldwide communication infrastructure playing a crucial role in our society. Sparked by their enormous success, recent years have witnessed an unprecedented growth in the interest in mathematical models applied to communication systems, and in particular on scheduling and resource-sharing algorithms that aim at optimizing the performance of the system. Since randomness is inherent in the network, the mathematical methodology deployed is often of a stochastic nature. Given the complexity of the stochastic processes under study, a considerable number of general approaches have been developed based on an investigation of the stochastic process and associated control problems. Some suggested tools are fluid limits, diffusion limits and mean-field analysis. Other approaches which are also explored use Markovian decision processes, stochastic comparisons and performance analysis using matrix analytic methods. In addition, it is becoming an increasing challenge to apply tools and ideas from deterministic control. Another parallel line of research deals with the game theoretic aspects of network control and the inter play between game theory and stochastic anaylsis. This workshop aims to bring together both young and well experienced researchers, active in the field of analysis and control of queueing networks, resource allocation and scheduling of stochastic systems. The workshop includes keynote speakers, tutorials and invited presentations by leading researchers. It is the third in the series Young European Queueing Theorists (YEQT), organized within the framework of EURANDOM's Queueing and Performance Analysis program. The first meeting was devoted to transient and asymptotic analysis of queueing systems whereas the second one focused on the stochastic analysis of modern communication networks.
